Medical Circular Living Labs Guidebook

How can healthcare organisations develop and scale circular solutions in real-world healthcare settings?
Learn more about this in the “Medical Circular Living Labs Guidebook” by Marcel Crul, Peter Joore, Johan Reijenga and Jan-Carel Diehl, developed as part of the ESCH-R project. The guidebook provides a practical framework for establishing Medical Circular Living Labs (MCLLs): real-life research and innovation ecosystems embedded in healthcare settings, where healthcare professionals, researchers, educational partners, industry partners and patients collaboratively develop and test circular solutions.
Science win 3 – Three important insights from the guidebook!
1 – An MCLL creates a space where healthcare professionals, researchers, industry partners, educational partners and patients can work together through co-creation. This allows circular solutions to be developed and tested within real clinical healthcare settings.
2 – The guidebook presents an eight-step process covering initiation, creation, development, testing, evaluation, integration, learning, and monitoring and scaling. This approach helps ensure that circular innovations are not only technically feasible, but also consider clinical safety, costs, regulations, organisational factors and acceptance.
3 – MCLLs go beyond individual pilot projects. Through continuous learning, evaluation and integration, local experiments can contribute to broader and more structural circular transformation within healthcare systems. The guidebook therefore provides an approach that can also be applied beyond the ESCH-R project and in other healthcare facilities.
