A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Innovation in Eye Surgery

ESCH-R Student Visit to DORC in Delft

February 26, 2026

Recently, students, accompanied by WP5 Lead Jan-Carel Diehl, visited DORC’s Center for Research and Innovation in Ophthalmic Surgery (CERIOS) in Delft. With involvement in both WP4 and WP5, DORC is an important partner in the ESCH-R project.

During the visit, the students gained a unique insight into the technologies used daily by vitreoretinal surgeon Redmer van Leeuwen at UMC Utrecht. They had the chance to see DORC’s advanced surgical platform up close and learn how it is applied in daily practice in eye surgery.

CERIOS serves as a key hub for innovation for DORC. The on-site wet lab provides a realistic environment for testing prototypes and evaluating new features in direct collaboration with health care professionals. Equipped with an advanced observation system, the facility enables close monitoring of product interactions, ensuring their clinical functionality and effectiveness before broader implementation.

In addition to innovation and direct collaboration with health care professionals, DORC’s manufacturing operations are an essential part of the story. In Zuidland, DORC’s  main production facility manufactures the innovative medical equipment  and instruments used worldwide in eye surgery.

The visit offered students a valuable opportunity to see how research, clinical practice, and industry come together within ESCH-R.
