In a continued push for sustainability within healthcare, Dr. Redmer van Leeuwen highlights the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices in ophthalmology. In an interview with De Oogarts, he discussed updated guidelines from the Project Group for Sustainable Ophthalmology, focusing on how intravitreal injections (IVIs) can be made more sustainable.
Dr. van Leeuwen pointed out several unnecessary items commonly used during the procedure, such as drapes, plastic trays, forceps, gowns, caps, pre- and post-injection antibiotics, and polypropylene sheets. These materials contribute significantly to waste and have a substantial environmental impact.
He urges ophthalmologists to assess their practices and adopt more sustainable approaches within their hospitals to minimize waste and reduce the carbon footprint of IVIs.
