On Thursday, 27 August 2026, TU Delft student Arundhati Malkhede will present her graduation research on: “Sustainable Packaging Redesign for a Vitrectomy Surgical Kit.” Her project was supervised by @ Jan Tsai ESCH-R PhD), @Cecile Cuijpers (TU Delft), Redmer van Leeuwen (ESCH-R UMCU) and @Jan Carel Diehl (ESCH-R WP5).

Her project looks at the packaging of a single-use kit used for vitrectomies, a type of eye surgery. Since healthcare in the Netherlands accounts for 7.3% of the country’s carbon emissions, reducing the environmental impact of products and packaging is an important step towards more sustainable healthcare.

She explores how the packaging could be redesigned using Circular Product Design. Ideas include making the packaging more compact, reducing material use, and exploring reusable or biobased materials, while still meeting sterilization and regulatory requirements. The research connects to wider sustainability ambitions such as Green Deal 3.0 and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.
